When Northwestern University announced its major expansion in computer science, they asked us to help tell the story. Mode Project collaborated with the university’s McCormick School of Engineering, creating a short video about the expansion and the crossing of traditional boundaries into fields such as journalism, robotics, education and art.

We leveraged our strength as an integrated studio by combining production, 2D and 3D animation, live-action production, storytelling and editing to tell Northwestern’s powerful, authentic story. This video is our second film for Northwestern, building on the success of award-winning “A Different Way of Thinking, the engineering school’s flagship brand video.

It’s hard to be in this field and not be excited about the future.
— Larry Birnbaum, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Northwestern University

Behind the Scenes
Our nimble production team shot footage in Northwestern’s cutting-edge labs and classrooms, focusing on capturing the collaborations across academic disciplines such as robotics, education, art and journalism. The film’s audio track is built from Mode-directed interviews of real people. The voices of Northwestern’s world-class faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduates make up the authentic, unscripted audio track.

An important part of our creative process involves experimentation, testing, refinement and rapid prototyping. Here’s a collection of test renders, styleframes, Processing experiments and other material that didn’t make it into the film. It’s the very beginning of the process.
